Driving from Tokyo to Nozawa Onsen in winter can be difficult. The cost of renting a car isn't much cheaper than taking the train or bus, and unless you're comfortable with Japanese expressways, those options might be better. Additionally, winter roads can be hazardous, so if you decide to drive, ensure you have a 4WD vehicle with winter tires or chains, extra antifreeze, and a reliable GPS or map.
